Stories behind SUSTAIN
SUMMARY: IUCN is leading the Sustainability and Inclusion Strategy for Growth Corridors in Africa (SUSTAIN-Africa), which applies the landscape approach to support climate-resilient, inclusive green growth in the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) and the Zambezi Valley Development Corridor of Mozambique. The programme facilitates joint action among community, government and business stakeholders to manage water, land and ecosystems sustainably while ensuring that small-scale producers, vulnerable communities and women are included in growth opportunities. This programme works in demonstration landscapes to implement change on the ground, yielding evidence and knowledge as the basis for promoting changes in institutions, policies and business strategies at corridor, national and region-wide levels. In turn, this provides the needed impetus for scaling-up of inclusive green growth. Examples of activities to date include establishing co-investment partnerships with a number of businesses in the demonstration landscapes for payment for ecosystem services for sustainable water supply and climate resilience, developing community based value chains and business training for SMEs, and integrating climate smart agriculture, natural resource management and value chain development. In addition, SUSTAIN is working with local NGOs on landscape restoration and climate resilience focused on charcoal production and water flows as well as capacity building and peer to peer learning on sustainability best practices, pesticide management and environmental impact assessment.
