Business and Biodiversity

BioBiz Exchange webinar series

IUCN's BioBiz Exchange initiative hosts quarterly webinars featuring PANORAMA solutions on business engagement.

Partnering with experts from around the globe, the BioBiz Exchange webinars are an opportunity to share inspiring stories, lessons and ideas that can be replicated by civil society actors working to influence business and biodiversity outcomes.

Each webinar addresses timely questions raised by IUCN Members and civil society partners, who are engaging with business to make a difference for conservation.

Creating effective multi-stakeholder partnerships for conservation (December 10, 2020) En, Fr, Sp

How to establish multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) was the top need that emerged from a recent IUCN survey on the conservation community’s readiness and willingness to engage with business. MSPs are an effective means to understand different perspectives and identify a common agenda for scaling up action to improve outcomes for people and nature.

The final IUCN BioBiz Exchange webinar of the current series on 10 Dec at 14:00 CET (En, Fr, and Sp.) featured Herman Brouwer, Senior advisor on Multi-stakeholder Processes in Food Security at Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation, who presented the MSP Guide and resources (available in En, Fr and Sp). We also heard two successful case studies of MSPs from Jaime Nalvarte Armas, Director of Peruvian NGO AIDER, and Carla Danelutti, Ecosystem Resilience and Spatial Planning Manager from the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, followed by participants' discussions in break out rooms to discuss lessons in their context.

Using policy to influence business practices (March 03, 2020)

In this 6th Panorama webinar on business engagement, we highlight the ways in which civil society organisations can use policy, both directly and indirectly to influence business practices. Command-and-control policies enacted by the State are commonly used to prevent environmental and social impacts of business on nature; however, this webinar explores other policy tools and pathways that civil society can actively use to motivate business to change its practices. The IUCN Environmental Law Centre will provide an introduction of these various policy concepts and resources, and Tropenbos International Ghana present an engaging case study.

Mobilizing finance for conservation (December 12, 2019)

Out of $400B USD estimated for environmental finance, only $52B USD flows in conservation projects mostly from governments. Countries are facing increasing socio-economic and political pressures, while conservation urgently requires further support; we need to understand how to better mobilize finance for conservation. For example, if we agree that it is not enough for businesses to solely restore landscapes to address their impact on biodiversity loss, then how can we incentivize them to do more for biodiversity net gain, such as making business case for financing protected areas? Overall, the necessity to gather all pertinent actors, to ask the important questions, address the issues, but most importantly share solutions that have proven successful, is an imperative.
