Assessing Species:
IUCN – through its Global Species Programme, Partners and Species Survival Commission (SSC) Specialist Groups –assesses the conservation status of species to inform sustainable conservation policy and action. Assessing the status of a species is important to prioritise conservation measures and assess their effectiveness.
The Global Species Programme collects, collates and processes scientific material from global species experts to inform The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, as well as influential scientific papers and reports. IUCN experts use this information to advise programmatic work. Experts also participate in international conservation policy and discussion panels at global conservation fora.
The IUCN Red List plays an important role in this as the world's most comprehensive information source on the extinction risk of animal, fungus and plant species.

The IUCN Red List informs the IUCN Red List Index (RLI), which provides a clear view of real trends within different taxonomic groups, and for biodiversity as a whole. The Red List index is a key indicator for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 – Life on Land.
