Under the theme ”Solutions for welfare and sustainable development”, the III Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Protected Areas will be held from 14-17 October 2019. A space for experience exchange, debate on the formulation and implementation of public policies, research and academia, the Congress –created in 1997– is an initiative from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). The Congress will also reflect the debates and conclusions of the Latin America and Caribbean region in terms of IUCN global events, in particular the World Parks Congress. In this regard, this III Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Protected Areas will incorporate The Promise of Sydney (World Parks Congress 2014) and take a regional position to the next IUCN World Conservation Congress, in 2020.
Strategic objectives
- Promote the best management practices of protected areas at the service of society.
- Evaluate and strengthen the contribution of protected areas to international commitments of nature conservation for wellbeing and sustainable development.
- Strengthen and renew the management of protected areas aligned with current and future needs.

- Society and protected areas: connections for wellbeing.
- Protected areas in global commitments, ecoregional visions, other alliances and opportunities.
- Protected areas in systems, landscape approaches, management of wider territories and integration with social and economic sectors.
- Collaborative conservation, social responsibility, necessary innovation and participation in the management of protected areas.
Crosscutting themes
- Wellbeing and protected areas (and its relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals).
- Protected areas and climate changes (contributions to mitigation and adaptation).
- Coastal-marine conservation and sustainability and protected areas.
- Interconnections and protected areas (interconnections between themes, between social groups, in territory, cultures, visions, etc.). Enabling conditions for these interconnections.
