La Liste du patrimoine mondial comprend 1121 biens ayant une valeur exceptionnelle universelle. Les sites naturels, qui représentent près de 23% de l’ensemble de la liste, comptent 39 sites mixtes (tant culturels que naturels) et 213 sites naturels.
