Recognizing the interdependency of the three pillars of sustainable development - social, economic and environmental, IUCN’s work in Eastern and Southern Africa underscores the fact that sustainable economic development depends on sound environmental management. ESARO, in line with IUCN’s Global Programme goals has the following programmes:
Conservation Areas and Species
IUCN engages directly in biodiversity conservation in the region through its innovative thematic programme, Conservation Areas and Species Diversity (CASD).
Coastal and Ocean Resilience
IUCN has redesigned its WIO coastal and marine resilience program strategy to efficiently address current challenges. This new strategy called Towards a Blue Future, aims at responding to the needs of the WIO region, both in terms of conservation and development.
Integrated water resources management (IWRM)
The goal of the Integrated Water Resource Management programme is to implement sustainable water and wetland management and mainstream ecosystems approach into IWRM processes in order to support poverty reduction, equitable development, resilience to climate change and conservation of biological diversity.
Forest Landscape & Livelihoods
The Forest Landscape & Livelihoods thematic area in Eastern and Southern Africa aims to deploy nature-base solutions to regional challenges through effective and equitable governance of rangeland and forest landscapes/ecosystems providing multiple benefits to communities of the region.
Drylands Resilience land management
Sub-Saharan Africa drylands cover 13.9 million km and hold about 425 million people. The goal of the programme is to slow and reverse land degradation in the drylands in order to positively impact the livelihoods of millions of vulnerable households.
