Business and Biodiversity

Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) for Business

The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) is a multi-institutional programme of work involving BirdLife International, Conservation International, IUCN and UNEP-WCMC.
IBAT for business draws on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and other tools.

Purpose and objective

IBAT provides a basic risk screening on biodiversity. It draws together information on globally recognised biodiversity information drawn from a number of IUCN’s Knowledge Products: IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Key Biodiversity Areas (priority sites for conservation) and Protected Planet/The World Database on Protected Areas (covering nationally and internationally recognised sites, including IUCN management categories I–VI, Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance and World Heritage sites). Through an interactive mapping tool, decision-makers are able to easily access and use this up-to-date information to identify biodiversity risks and opportunities within or close to a project boundary.

IBAT helps businesses incorporate biodiversity considerations into key project planning and management decisions, including:

  • Screening and classifying potential investments
  • Siting an operation in a given region
  • Developing action plans to manage for biodiversity risks and impacts
  • Assessing risks associated with potential sourcing regions
  • Reporting on corporate biodiversity performance

Our users

Decision-makers in businesses, especially those involved with risk management, identification of critical  habitat/sensitive sites and safeguards, ISO 14000 certification and on-going audit, sustainability reporting (such as Global Reporting Initiative – GRI) and CSR teams interested in understanding the biodiversity values at or near to their areas of operation.

Tool type and results

Data are presented in spatial and tabular formats, together with simple mapping functionality. IBAT links to more detailed information and includes on-the-fly reports, option to manage your own catalogue of sites, outputs to support specific user needs and spatial data downloads.
