The Mediterranean Red List

In much the same way as a barometer measures atmospheric pressure to help us prepare for adverse weather conditions, the IUCN Mediterranean Red List measures the pressures acting on species in this region, guiding and informing conservation actions to help prevent extinctions.
Mediterranean Red List website

The Mediterranean Red List of Species is based on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species site that includes a compelling review of the conservation status of species at the regional level, identifying those that are threatened with extinction and the main threats they are facing. Therefore, it is a powerful tool to lead, prioritize and monitor the conservation action in the region.

Objectives

  • To provide the basis for a consolidated Mediterranean Red List of Species  as a baseline for monitoring the success of conservation action.
  • To inform and influence regional Conventions and Governments in order to catalyze action for biodiversity conservation.
  • To contribute to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species by adding Mediterranean endemic species.
  • To mobilize existing knowledge on species and to serve as a federating mechanism for scientists, academia and NGOs from the region.
  • To build capacities on species conservation.

Current Priority Focus

RECENT RED LIST ASSESSMENTS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

pinna_nobilis_mussel_conservation Photo: IUCN During the last 3 years, the Mediterranean Noble Pen Shell (Pinna nobilis) has been experiencing mass mortality due to a parasite. IUCN is addressing this emergency immediately. Just recently the Pinna nobilis was placed under the Critically Endangered category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. See the factsheet created by IUCN-med to learn the conservation actions to mitigate the spread of the disease.
porifera_sponges_conservation Photo: IUCN The conservation status of Mediterranean Porifera is being assessed. The main target species addressed are Keratosa (subclass) and Hexactinellida (class), together with all the carnivorous species (family Cladorhizidae). This is the first time that animals in the phylum Porifera had been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Reducing threats to Raptors and other threatened birds of prey requires IUCN-Med and other experts to examine electric power lines that often electrocute birds that land on the power lines causing mass mortality. To do so, IUCN-Med is conducting multiple expeditions (for the raptor in Morocco) to create a database of powerlines in the country and identify raptor territories.

Project 4

Through this project, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation tackles the gaps in knowledge about Mediterranean species in the region.
