The CEC is composed of change and management specialists, strategic communication and marketing experts, learning and capacity development practitioners, conservationists, behavioural and conservation psychologists, and educators from all sectors, working to strengthen the Union and support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In order to achieve our goal of inspiring conservation by activating our over 1,400 members, the CEC 2017-2020 strategic work plan supports the Strategic Planning Timeline for the post-2020 Biodiversity Framework, focusing on strategic events and opportunities in the lead up to the World Conservation Congress in Marseille and the CBD COP 15 in Beijing in 2020
Organizing for success
Since 2018, the work of the Steering Committee is organized into three main areas of work:
#NatureForAll
#NatureForAll is a global movement to inspire love of nature. It is founded on the knowledge that the more people experience, connect with, and share their love of nature, the more support and action there will be for its conservation. Personal experiences and connections with nature provide powerful benefits for individual and societal health, well-being, and resilience and are also the foundation of a lifelong support for nature conservation, including parks and protected areas, and the achievement of biodiversity and sustainable development goals and targets (e.g. Aichi Targets 1 and 11; SDGs). As an inclusive IUCN-led coalition of partners, #NatureForAll brings together a diversity of players toshare actions, collaborate, and amplify our collective reach to engage new audiences to connect with and fall in love with nature, and ignite action for conservation.
Communication Connects
Effective Communication is the key to transforming the day-to-day way that people treat the planet. It is the link between knowledge and action, between knowing and doing. CEC wants to build capacity in communications for conservation results. The work of Communications Connects includes CEC knowledge products, resources and publications, online communication trainings, in person capacity-building sessions at strategic events, environmental education and traditional knowledge and community engagement specialty groups.
Youth Engagement and Intergenerational Partnerships
In 2017, CEC began work to attract and involve more young professionals in the Commission. A Call for a Youth Engagement and Intergenerational Partnership Representative was launched by the end of that year that resulted in adding a Youth Representative to the Steering Committee. The Youth Group chair represents the views of young people and leverages their important role in awareness-raising and inspiring conservation action. New and current young CEC members are being invited to collaborate on #NatureForAll through events and learning activities around the world, align CEC strategies with the IUCN Task Force for Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability, and coordinate activities through youth leadership in the other five IUCN Commissions.
