Species conservation relies on effective policy and decision-making. IUCN provides authoritative information and advice to support international conventions, governments and nations. This advice is used to develop international, regional or national conservation policy.
International Policy
IUCN provides scientific and technical advice to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other partners regarding biodiversity targets.
Data from The IUCN Red List are used as indicators for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14: Life Below Water and Goal 15: Life on Land.
Measuring the impact of policy
Biodiversity indicators are statistical measures of biodiversity, which help scientists, managers, and politicians understand the condition of biodiversity and the factors that affect it.
IUCN contributes directly to the biodiversity indicators through the Red List Index.
Standardised measures make it easier to monitor, compare and communicate changes in the health and diversity of nature over time – in this way, it is possible to know whether conservation action is working.
