Eco-Engineering for slope stabilisation

 

The problem

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Salween River valley is one of the world’s richest areas in terms of plant biodiversity. This natural wealth, together with the safety of people living in the valley is, however, under threat from massive soil erosion and landslides, mainly triggered by road construction. Many new roads are being established across the province to link formerly isolated towns and villages. However the poorly designed road is at risk of leading to more and more catastrophic events and sediment pollution particularly with increased severe weather events.

 

EPIC’s solution

To mitigate slope degradation leading to soil runoff and landslides, EPIC is investigating the use of eco-engineering for the stabilisation of steep slopes in the Salween River valley. The French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) is conducting research to identify suitable plant species that can reduce soil particle runoff and erosion on steep slopes. The findings will inform bio-engineering solutions to prevent or recover from superficial landslides while allowing construction to proceed.
