Presided by the Government of Fiji, the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) took place in Bonn, Germany from 6 to 17 November 2017. The Conference was expected to make progress on developing modalities, procedures and guidelines for the operationalisation of the Paris Agreement, which are to be finalised in 2018.

At UNFCCC COP23, IUCN highlighted the critical role of nature in providing practical solutions in tackling climate change and adapting to its impacts, and the need for the guidance being currently developed for the operationalisation of the Paris Agreement to further encourage and facilitate these efforts. IUCN events
In addition to following the official negotiations, IUCN was strongly engaged in the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (GCA) to support the acceleration of global climate action and ambition on the ground. It actively participated in the thematic action tracks on forests, water, agriculture and oceans and coastal zones, in the high-level sessions on building greater resilience and in the climate action and SDG2 roundtables.
IUCN and its members and commissions also hosted several events in the IUCN Pavilion in the Bonn Zone on a wide range of topics – ranging from forests, water, ecosystem-based adaptation, oceans, blue carbon, world heritage, indigenous peoples, law, gender, and business engagement – that showcase the different dimensions of the Union’s climate-related work.
