The ELP works across different scales from global to local, and across the full spectrum of sectors concerning natural resource governance.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN in 2015 laid out a plan of action for people and the planet. Conserving nature is a prerequisite for achieving the broader visions of the agenda and law plays a fundamental cross-cutting role.

The current major areas of activity of the ELP are centred on Climate Change, Oceans and Coasts, Protected Areas and Land Use, Water Law and Governance, Wildlife.

Over the years the ELP covered in its work a wide range of other issues including Access & Benefit Sharing, Business & Biodiversity, Governance & MEAs, Payments for Ecosystem Services.
