Islands of Oppertunities Week, Aruba - BEST technical workshop

Aruba, IUCN, BEST, EUOverseas

There will be a BEST technical workshop, February 20 in Aruba during the OCT-EU Forum. The event shall bring together representatives from the Overseas Countries and Territories and Outermost Regions, as well as other organisations and stakeholders.

The findings of the event will be brought to the OCTs Ministerial Conference on 23 February 2017. The agenda will showcase results of the BEST Preparatory Action and the BEST 2.0 Programme, inform about new developments and provide the opportunity to discuss on how to build a sustainable partnership dedicated to mobilising resources to protect the unique ecosystems and the services they provide in the EU Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories.

Islands at the frontline of climate change: from impacts to solutions

COP21: 7 December 2015 Le Bourget – Centre de Conférence – French Pavilion

Organized by the French Overseas Ministry and IUCN, this event will assess the situation in the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean regions where both Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and EU Overseas are located, all facing the same climatic issues and challenges. Real sentries, these EU Overseas are living laboratories showcasing solutions to be promoted into the Lima-Paris Action Plan.

Presentation of the first outcomes of the BEST III ecosystem profiles

RICH, BEAUTIFUL AND VULNERABLE –

PRESENTING THE BEST ECOSYSTEM PROFILES OF THE EU OUTERMOST REGIONS AND OVERSEAS COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES

On 19 October 2015, the preliminary results of the BEST III regional ecosystem profiles were presented to the larger public during a full-day event hosted at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.

The representatives of the regional BEST knowledge hubs shared the outcomes of their participatory work developed in consultation with local stakeholders over the past year.The profiling experts illustrated the biodiversity and ecosystem services as well as main threats specific to their region. These scientific data served as the base for the discussion at the local level to identify and prioritize Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), and guide future conservation activities. Each BEST regional knowledge hub concluded with tangible critical areas for actions and investment needs.

International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change: from Strategies to Action

This high-level meeting follows one held in July 2008 in the island of La Réunion, under the French Presidency of the European Union. It aims to assess, six years after its adoption, the implementation of the “Message from Reunion Island”, and define a new roadmap and priorities for action.
