Resilience means being able to survive, adapt and improve in the face of stress and change, to be able to withstand shocks, but reorganise and rebuild when necessary. The capacity to bounce back but ‘bounce forward’ to a better state if possible. Humanity has been hugely successful historically at responding to stresses, by innovating and inventing new technologies. Over time, however, unintended social and environmental consequences have accumulated because technologies alone offer only narrowly optimised solutions
