Water and Nature Series
The IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) has worked with 80+ partner organizations across the world to demonstrate water management that supports healthy rivers and communities.
A toolkit series has been developed under WANI:
- to support learning on how to mainstream an ecosystems approach in water resource management;
- it is aimed at practitioners, policy-makers and students from NGOs, governments and academia;
- to build on practical case studies to show how key principles of sustainable water management are implemented in river basins;
- current toolkits cover the management of flows, governance, economics and incentives, and adaptation to climate change.
The series continues to grow with its latest publication, SPRING, from August 2016.
SPRING : Managing groundwater sustainably

This guide provides an explanation of the technical challenges that must be met to manage groundwater well and how good governance, economic analysis and incentives, and effective social organisation each play a vital role in the solutions needed. Through explanation of key concepts supported by practical examples from the field, SPRING shows how communities, civil society, technical specialists and policy makers collaborate to create change in groundwater management.
Negotiate : Reaching agreements over water

This guide aims to provide practical tools for government officials, NGOs and local communities to create platforms for negotiations that are balanced and open, in order to arrive at collaborative action to improve water resources management.The book contains a brief overview of theory in this field, followed by practical tools and steps to change power relations. It describes how to analyse the issues and political play involved, convince colleagues and stakeholders, set up campaigns and advocacy, set in place participatory methods, enter negotiations, and move towards a multi-stakeholder platform for action.
Rule : Reforming water governance
Author(s): Iza, Alejandro; Stein, Robyn

This guide shows how national water reform processes can deliver good water governance, by focussing on the principles and practice of reform. RULE guides managers and decision makers on a journey which provides an overview of what makes good law, policy and institutions, and the steps needed to build a coherent and fully operational water governance structure.
Flow : The essentials of environmental flows

This guide offers practical advice for the implementation of environmental flows in the river basins of the world. It explains how to assess flow requirements, change the legal and financial framework, and involve stakeholders in negotiations. ‘Flow’ sets out a path from conflict over limited water resources and environmental degradation to a water management system that reduces poverty, ensures healthy rivers and shares water equitably.
Share : Managing waters across boundaries
Author(s): Sadoff, Claudia, ed. ; Greiber, Thomas, ed. ; Smith, Mark, ed. ; Bergkamp, Ger, ed.; IUCN, Water and Nature Initiative
Published: 2008
Series: WANI Toolkit
ISBN: 978-2-8317-1029-7
WANI's latest toolkit publication provides an overview of the world's shared water resources and insights for managing these resources.
Using case studies from around the world, it describes the benefits to be gained from cooperation and the challenges of constructing legal frameworks, institutions, management processes and financing, and partnership strategies to govern transboundary waters equitably and sustainably. Share presents practical tools in plain language to help practitioners and stakeholders conceptualize and implement cooperative, participatory and sustainable water management. It emphasizes the value of information, communication, institutions and adaptability. Share also underscores the broad range of benefits that can be derived through cooperative management of international rivers and the need for equity in benefit sharing, particularly with regard to project-affected people.
Pay : Establishing payments for watershed services

This guide aims to provide practical tools to non specialists – essentially water resources planners, river basin managers, non-governmental organizations and private sector operators. It links the most recent practice on payments for hydrological services to current discourse on integrated water resources management and looks into the different aspects to consider when exploring the potential feasibility of establishing reward or payments for ecosystem services related to water security. Pay demystifies concepts and jargon, and through a series of tools, case studies and stories from around the world, describes pitfalls to avoid and provides hints to fill gaps in knowledge. It is based on a demand-driven approach, linking text, tools and illustrations to key questions emerging from current and potential practitioners.
