The Improved Coastal Watershed and Livelihoods Project aims to improve the management of the natural resources of the low basin and the coastal zone of the Goascorán river, which is born in the department of La Paz in Honduras, and serves as a frontier with El Salvador. The Project seeks to improved the conditions of biodiversity; the related to water ecosystem services; the mitigation of environmental damage in the salt forests, and finally, that the beneficiaries in the two countries can improve their livelihoods by developing economic activities in a sustainable way in both countries.
The Project will suport the restoration and protection of natural ecosystems and biodiversity of the targeted municipalities; will promote the improvement of the sustainability of rural livelihoods through climate-smart approaches; support watershed governance processes through the effectiveness and integration of the “source to sea” concept; and contribute to the reduction of climate vulnerability of watersheds and coastal areas through a mitigation-based adaptation approach.
The prioritized municipalities identified for the Project are: Concepción de Oriente, El Sauce, Pasaquina and San Alejo in El Salvador; and Caridad, Aramecina, Goascorán and Alianza in Honduras.
The Improved Coastal Watershed and Livelihoods Project is part of a IUCN initiative in which four projects complement and coordinate actions to promote integrated management of the Goascorán river basin, focusing on participatory approaches at all levels.
The implementation of the Project is through the cooperation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is implemented with the participation of three strategic partners:
• Salvadoran Foundation for Social Promotion and Economic Development (FUNSALPRODESE by its acronym in Spanish).
• Foundation for Rural Business Development (FUNDER by its acronym in Spanish )
• Committee for the Defense and Development of the Flora and Fauna of the Gulf of Fonseca (CODDEFFAGOLF by its acronym in Spanish)
