The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA) aims to address threats to biodiversity in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, while reducing poverty in communities in and around protected areas. Specifically, the programme will enhance existing institutions and networks by making the best available science and knowledge available for building capacity to improve policies and better decision-making on biodiversity conservation, protected areas management and access and benefit sharing.
In the framework of BIOPAMA, IUCN ORMACC is working with Caribbean nations to improve protected areas governance and day-to day management through capacity development programmes and the establishment of a regional observatory, the Caribbean Gateway – a hub for research and innovation that interprets and shares data to understand and communicate important trends in a changing environment. The Caribbean Gateway is hosted by the University of the West Indies and located in the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (UWI CERMES). Read more at www.biopama.org
