Guidelines
Mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with solar and wind energy development
The guidelines provide practical support for solar and wind energy developments by effectively managing risks and improving overall outcomes related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They are industry-focused and can be applied across the whole project development life cycle, from early planning through to decommissioning and repowering, using the mitigation hierarchy as a clear framework for planning and implementation. This report offers a review of literature from various sources on the impacts of the production and use of liquid biofuels, which are used mainly in the transport sector. Click here to download.
Guidelines on Biofuels and Invasive Species
The rapid development of biofuels to support greenhouse gas reductions, agricultural development and energy security has often occurred without adequate consideration of the threat of biological invasions. These guidelines outline step-by-step recommendations for interventions to minimise risks of biological invasions along the biofuels supply chain. Click here to download.
Implementing sustainable bioenergy production : a compilation of tools and approaches
A compilation of example principles, frameworks and tools already in use in the conservation community which may be applied to bioenergy production to identify and reduce environmental as well as socio-economic risks and promote opportunties. The aim is to provide stakeholders engaged in the bioenergy agenda (governments, businesses, communities, land owners, and individuals) the tools to achieve more sustainable outcomes in relation to ecosystems and livelihoods. Workshops
The Greening Blue Energy project aims to facilitate well-balanced and science-based discussions on the impacts on the marine environment from offshore renewable energy developments and as such this publication provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the potential biodiversity impacts of offshore wind energy on the marine environment. Removing Barriers to the Implementation of More Sustainable Biofuels
Participants at a jointly-hosted Shell-IUCN workshop in Gland, Switzerland in May 2009 identified alignment of policy and standards and information for land-use planning as areas to overcome implementation barriers to advance the sustainability of biofuel developments. Click here to download.
IUCN roadmap on sustainable bioenergy workshop report
This report is a summary of the discussions that took place during the workshop, presenting the main outcomes both generally on bioenergy and then specifically in relation to IUCN. Full details of the discussions are available in the annexes. Click here to download.
Workshop summary : towards harmonization for biofuel sustainability standards
Held on 17 – 18 February 2010 in London. Based on earlier work in this area, IUCN and Shell decided to convene members Standards-setting bodies and biofuels supply chain actors to identify opportunities for creating synergies and efficiencies between several of the most prominent schemes relevant for biofuel production. Report of the Shell-IUCN Indirect Land Use Change Workshop
IUCN and Shell organized a workshop on indirect land use change (iLUC) and biofuels (21‐22 September 2010, Chatham House, London). The session convened a range of stakeholders including agricultural commodity producers, biofuels producers and suppliers, research institutes, environmental NGOs and regulators. Biofuels and indirect land use change: The case for mitigation
This study examines the four options being considered by the European Commission for dealing with indirect land use change (ILUC) arising from the use of biofuels under the Renewable Energy Directive. Published by Ernst & Young. Click here to download.
Biofuels for sustainable rural development and empowerment of women
These case studies explore the potential of biofuels to provide sustainable livelihoods and local sources of energy for people in rural areas of developing countries, with a special emphasis on women. Research and preparation was organized and managed by ENERGIA, the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, with support from IUCN, and SANERI, the South African National Energy Research Institute (Pty) Ltd.
