The Topic:
- Food production and irrigation accounts for around 70% of global freshwater abstraction
- 580 billion m3 are abstracted every year for energy production, representing 15% of global freshwater abstraction
- By 2015, 1800 million people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity and two-thirds of the world population could be under stress conditions
How can we make the world more sustainable with a growing population and shrinking resources? The precarious balance between food, energy and water resources - better known as the nexus - involves complex trade-offs between sectors. Compromises reached in terms of governance are often piecemeal and fragile, but we can enhance resource security if we play it right.
Policy makers still struggle with the water-energy-food nexus, but an understanding of the challenge is growing. In the meantime, the world has set a clear agenda for itself with the Sustainable Development Goals (in 2030). Can the nexus help delivering these SDGs and how can we integrate policies between sectors to reach all those goals, while stabilising resources? This session will address challenges to developing integrated policy, and discussing success stories to mobilise multiple sectoral responses to achieve multiple development objectives.
