Gender and environment linkages exist across sectors, with diverse implications for development at all levels, in all countries. Gender gaps inhibit full, effective, equitable and efficient development across sectors – responding to this, international donors, organisations, finance mechanisms and private enterprise are developing innovative ways to bridge gaps.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a prerequisite to effective conservation, climate action, and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). International agreements on biodiversity (CBD), sustainable development (Agenda 2030) and—most recently—climate change (The Paris Agreement) present new opportunities for engaging women and accelerating equitable action. From Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) processes to biodiversity strategies and climate change gender action plans, governments, businesses, and civil society are now embracing gender-responsive solutions to address the world’s most pressing development challenges.
IUCN is collaborating with UNDP, UN Environment, the European Investment Bank and other partners to engage actors from across spheres at the upcoming European Development Days, which is Europe’s leading forum on international cooperation and development. The session will discuss specific approaches to more effective, equitable and resilient outcomes. This High-level Panel will build awareness of a diverse EDD audience on gender-environment linkages and the importance of gender-responsive strategies and solutions for tackling climate change’s pressing challenges, including especially the potential to erode gender equality gains, and meeting the SDGs.
Participants will learn of relevant findings related to challenges, gaps and opportunities to integrate women’s empowerment and gender equality into sustainable development frameworks, particularly into Nationally Determined Contributions for addressing climate change, for accelerating progress towards gender equality. They will also be able to identify entry points for mainstreaming gender into environmental and climate change governance, planning and policy levels, as well as its connection to achieving the SDGs, based on concrete examples from public and private sector.
