Proper management of marine environments is essential for everyone, but especially for those whose main source of food and income directly relies on the ocean. The IUCN engages in securing coastal livelihoods by working with local communities to preserve important marine environments.
This project area involves a host of actions: including working to conserve “blue carbon” captures like wetlands and mangroves; preserving local species and helping mitigate the impacts of climate change. The IUCN engages with regional offices and on-the-ground partners to realise secure coastal livelihoods.
IUCN is also works to promote sustainable aquaculture in resource-dependent communities, drawing on a case study in Zanzibar.
