Preparatory meetings and timeline

This section provides a timeline with relevant prepatory meetings in the lead-up to CBD COP15 and the adoption of a new framework for biodiversity.

    The Conference of the Parties requested the Executive Secretary to prepare a proposal for a comprehensive and participatory preparatory process and timetable for the follow-up to the Strategic Plan 2011-2020.

    As a first step in the process, the Executive Secretary of the CBD invited Parties, relevant organisations, and others to provide comments and inputs to the preparatory process

    The 21st meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice of the Convention considered biodiversity-related scenarios and related scientific and technical information on trends and projections towards 2050

    Space for Nature Symposium

    The ZSL and National Geographic along with IUCN, BirdLife, CBD and others hosted an international science-policy symposium to review the science informing future area-based conservation targets and support the discussions on the post-2020 strategy

  • Peer review on draft proposals for the preparation of the post-2020

    Inputs provided in 2017 served to draft proposals for a comprehensive and participatory process for the 2020.  The document was circulated for peer-review.

    CCI Expert workshop

    The objective of the expert meeting organised by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative was to enhance understanding of the need to base development of a post-2020 global biodiversity framework on available evidence

    CBD SBSTTA22-SBI2

    These meetings assessed progress in implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and recommended the adoption of an updated preparatory process. SBI recommended that the post-2020 biodiversity framework be accompanied by an inpirational 2030 Mission

  • High-level Political Forum 2018 on Sustainable Development

    Under the theme "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies", the HLPF reviewed in depth 6 of the 17 SDGs, including SDG15 - Life on Land.

    The 2018 UN Biodiversity Conference effectively launched the negotiations for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

    Regional consultation workshop on post-2020 for Asia-Pacific

    This was the first of a series of Regional Consultation Workshops on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework organised by the CBD to ensure a harmonized approach to the preparation of recommendations for the new framework, identify key issues and challenges in the region, and facilitate discussions at the meetings of the Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

    The 7th Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) considered the Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and approved the Summary for Policy makers. The global assessment is a key input to the post-2020.
