The countries of eastern and southern Africa host a vast variety and abundance of the world’s biological and natural resources, including 7 of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
The SADC TFCA Financing Facility has launched its first Call for Concepts for biodiversity conservation in Southern Africa. This call is open to government entities, Non-Governmental Organisations and Community- Based Organisations (CBOs) implementing biodiversity conservation related projects in the SADC region The call for Concepts is open from 15th June 2021 - 15th September 2021
The Government of Rwanda will in March 2022 host the inaugural IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC) to discuss conservation of the continent’s protected areas. This comes after the relaunch of APAC in Kigali, Rwanda on 20th April 2021.
Grants to the total value of 684’461 EUR have been awarded to four organisations in Madagascar to address biodiversity conservation needs in line with national policy and the priorities of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD).
Grants to the total value of 368’939 EUR have been awarded to five organisations in Uganda to address biodiversity conservation needs. The European Union (EU) and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) have made funds available through the IUCN Save Our Species African Wildlife Initiative and the BIOPAMA Action Component (AC), both managed by IUCN.
Kenya has launched a 5-year, USD 34 million project under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to help reduce the cost of climate change-induced drought on the country’s national economy. The project titled ‘TWENDE’ – Towards Ending Drought Emergencies , is an ecosystem based adaptation project to be implemented in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid rangelands.

Sustainably managed mangroves can provide ecosystem services such as coastal protection, food and medicines as well as carbon storage, positively impacting both biodiversity and human well-being. The IUCN Global Standard for NbS provides a tool to help ensure that projects labelled as Nature-based Solutions - for example through restoration of mangroves - do indeed deliver the anticipated benefits to both society and biodiversity.
