How we engage 

The World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) advances environmental law around the globe by providing specialized knowledge and assistance to strengthen the legal foundations of the conservation of nature and sustainable development through the conceptual advancement of environmental principles, norms, and laws, and by building the capacity of communities to benefit from the environmental rule of law.

    2nd World Environmental Law Congress

    WCEL has decided to split the global 2nd World Environmental Law Congress into a series of converging regional hybrid events. The regional events will consider A Critical Decade for Environmental Law by expanding upon the original Congress themes.

    Environmental Rule of Law

    At the 1st IUCN World Environmental Law Congress: the “IUCN World Declaration on the Environmental Rule of Law” was adopted, outlining 13 principles to serve as the foundation for developing and implementing solutions for ecologically sustainable development.

    IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020

    The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the French government have agreed to hold the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 from 3 to 11 September 2021 in Marseille.

    Global Pact for the Environment

    The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 10 May 2018 setting in motion a process seeking to discuss and reach agreement on the aims of a Global Pact for the Environment.
