PANORAMA - Solutions for a Healthy Planet

PANORAMA promotes solutions that demonstrate how well-protected biodiversity and well-managed ecosystems help address societal challenges and thereby achieve development benefits.
PANORAMA Solutions

PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet is a partnership initiative, which identifies and promotes examples of tested and replicable “solutions” and enables their wider application through offering cross-sectoral global exchange opportunities, thus facilitating peer-to-peer learning from successful practice in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

PANORAMA is a joint initiative together with IUCN, the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, GRID-Arendal, Rare Conservation, IFOAM Organics International, the World Bank Group, ICOMOS and ICCROM with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), the World Bank, the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Global Environment Facility. The function of the PANORAMA Secretariat is currently provided by IUCN and GIZ.

PANORAMA contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 of the Convention for Biological Diversity with its Aichi Targets and the climate change adaptation and mitigation goals as defined under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

The PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet web platform (www.panorama.solutions) was launched in September 2016 during the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawai’i. The PANORAMA platform is the world’s leading online database and digital interface dedicated to unearthing proven solutions that work for nature and people across sectors. Backed by a powerful alliance of international development and environmental organisations, PANORAMA features 800+ detailed solutions.

PANORAMA recognises that learning from successful practice leads to long term improvement in conservation and sustainable development, through better decision-making about, planning and implementation of, project interventions and policies. PANORAMA thereby creates impact at the practical and at the political level by disseminating ideas across sectors and disciplines so that more people may adopt better practices.

THE SOLUTIONING APPROACH

For the purposes of this partnership, solutions are defined as specific, applied examples of successful processes or approaches that address challenges to sustainable development. Solutions can be entire project interventions or particular aspects of a project or approach. Replicable “key ingredients” of a solution are called “building blocks”.

Solutions are documented and shared widely to benefit from knowledge and understanding of the elements of a successful approach to resolving a problem and inspire application of the specific tools and lessons across geographies and themes. Rather than learning from scratch each time, the idea is to benefit from solutions in one place or context and make these available in a deliberate way across a broader community of practice.

PANORAMA is designed to engage its online and offline user community in four phases that include the solutioning approach: reflexion, documentation, communication and adaptation. By breaking down and documenting a solution according to its component building blocks, tacit knowledge is converted to explicit knowledge that can then be transferred between stakeholders. Through the transfer and uptake of building blocks in a novel application domain or administration, practitioners consider a broader range of management approaches in different contexts. This process should therefore generate improved understanding and enhanced capabilities for adapting and improving the solutioning process within a specific community of practice.
