IUCN participated in the fourteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP14) and concurrent meetings of the Protocols of the Convention.that took place from 17-29 November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Under the theme Investing in biodiversity for people and planet, the UN Biodiversity Conference gathered representatives from more than 190 countries to step up efforts to halt the biodiversity loss and protect the ecosystems that support the livelihoods of billions.

P13: Cancun, Mexico
The CBD COP13 focused on mainstreaming the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity for well-being in sectoral and cross-sectoral plans, programs and policies.
With only 4 years left for the timeline of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011 - 2020 to be completed, the CBD COP13 focused on mainstreaming the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity for well-being in sectoral and cross-sectoral plans, programs and policies.
After the successful World Conservation Congress in Hawai'i, IUCN put forward in Cancun the recently adopted IUCN Prgramme 2017 - 2020, 112 Resolutions and Recommendations related to the most pressing conservation challenges, and the uplifting message contained in the Hawai'i Commitments.

IUCN @COP12: Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea
The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity took place from 6-17 October, 2014 in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea. The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (NP COP-MOP1) was held during the second week of COP12, from 13-17 October.
COP12 saw the launch of the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO4) - a mid-term assessment of progress towards the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020- for which IUCN contributed with ~30% of the indicators, and the entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol.

IUCN @COP11: Hyderabad, India
The eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity took place from 8-19 October, 2012 in Hyderabad, India.
After the adoption of the “Nagoya Package” at the very successful COP10, COP11 marked a move in the Convention from negotiation to implementation. In many ways, this COP was also an opportunity to correct and fine-tune issues that are found ineffective, insufficient or problematic in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Targets.
The IUCN 2013-2016 Programme adopted in 2012 supports the implementation of the Strategic Plan and was built to show, monitor and report on exactly where IUCN would contribute to the achievement of the Aichi Targets.
IUCN prepared eight position papers which contained IUCN’s policy recommendations for COP11 on relevant agenda items for IUCN and two information papers available here.
IUCN @COP10: Nagoya, Japan
The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) took place in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from 18 to 29 October, 2010.
COP10 considered a wide range of issues and adopted the Nagoya “package” including the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of the Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity (The Nagoya Protocol), the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Strategy for Resource Mobilization.
The work of IUCN greatly contributed to the success of COP10. IUCN was recognized as a main source to provide technical knowledge and expertise to the discussions and negotiations. IUCN’s role was particularly important in the negotiations of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and its twenty biodiversity targets.
IUCN organized, participated, hosted or co-hosted a good number of side events and special events throughout the two weeks of COP. IUCN prepared eight position papers which contained IUCN’s policy recommendations for COP10 on relevant agenda items for IUCN, and five information papers that you can find here.
