UNFCCC COP25 marks an important milestone before the start of the implementation of the Paris Agreement in 2020. 2020 is also the year when Parties have been requested to communicate new or updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in support of the Paris Agreement.
One of the most important tasks before Parties in Madrid will be to finalise the outstanding rules, procedures and guidance necessary for operationalising Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, an item that was left over from last year. Parties will also take stock of the implementation and ambition of pre-2020 climate action and support.

IUCN’s key messages
At UNFCCC COP25, IUCN will continue to highlight the critical role of nature and healthy ecosystems in providing effective and practical solutions for tackling climate change.
IUCN underscores the need for urgent and ambitious global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions involving all sectors and actors. IUCN also calls for the inclusion of more ambitious, concrete and quantifiable targets on nature-based solutions in the NDCs that Parties submit in 2020, drawing on its recent study Nature-based Solutions in Nationally Determined Contributions: Synthesis and recommendations for enhancing climate ambition and action by 2020, jointly published with Oxford University.

Events
IUCN is also strongly engaged in the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (MPGCA) to support the acceleration of global climate ambition and action on the ground. It will actively contribute to the thematic action tracks on land-use, water, resilience, and ocean and coastal zones and the SDG roundtables.
IUCN will also engage in a number of other side events and activities in relation to climate change and nature-based solutions, forests, ecosystem-based adaptation, water, indigenous peoples, and gender at the COP25 venue and at other venues in Madrid.
