Integrated Planning for Climate Change and Biodiversity

Land is playing an increasingly important role to secure social, economic, environmental and even religious rights.

Land will become the focus of intensified competition by several land users, which will be aggravated by the increasing demand for energy and food. It is important to thereby also take into account related themes, such as climate change and biodiversity and ensure that planning is used as a tool to integrate different sectors.

Planning as a tool is underused, not always embedded in solid legal frameworks or not always properly implemented.

The ELC also engages in policy dialogues at the international level, which attempts to ensure that the political leadership can translate recommendations into implementation and sustained action on the ground.

Currently, the ELC is working on integrating climate change and biodiversity concerns into land-use planning frameworks, including a global study assessing 16 jurisdictions and on the ground work in Colombia, Vietnam, Tanzania and Zambia through a collaboration with the regional offices. Through a combination of global reviews and in-country assessments, the ELC provides advice, guidance and assistance in demonstration activities.

This project will increase capacity to optimize planning to support biodiversity and climate change adaptation objectives, including through the effective engagement of protected area systems. Through a combination of global reviews and in-country assessments, target countries will be provided with advice, guidance, and assistance in demonstration activities.

The project results and demonstrations will provide illustrative recommendations for legal planning tools that meet development objectives and reinforce an ecosystem-based approach in the protected area systems. Policy dialogues will attempt to ensure that the necessary political leadership can translate recommendations into implementation and sustained action in their countries.

The project integrates climate change and biodiversity concerns into spatial planning frameworks, including a global study assessing sixteen jurisdictions and four target countries: Colombia, Tanzania, Zambia and Viet Nam.

Tanzania National Technical Committee on Land Use Planning re-launched and capacitated
The National Technical Committee on Land Use Planning (NTCLUP) was re-launched during a 2.5 day capacity building workshop held on 5th to 7th September, 2018, at Edema Conference, in Morogoro, Tanzania. The Technical Committee is composed of 15 members representing different sectors and drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and NGOs. It is legally established under the Land Use Planning Act (2007) and is tasked to provide technical advice to the National Land Use Planning Commission (NLUPC) on matters related to land use planning.

IUCN-UNITAR course on
INTEGRATED PLANNING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND BIODIVERSITY

Supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) of Germany, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) launched the pre-registration process for a new online course on “Integrated Planning for Climate Change and Biodiversity”. This online course was produced jointly by IUCN and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
