The Ocean Conference was a high-level United Nations Conference to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. The world community came together to discuss meaningful and innovative ways to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
IUCN's participation
The IUCN delegation - led by Cyriaque Sendashonga (Global Director, Programme and Policy), and coordinated by Carl Gustaf Lundin (Director, Global Marine and Polar Programme) - relayed the Union's concerns, positions and solutions for the conservation of our ocean.
A position paper produced for this occasion provides IUCN views on the major topics related to ocean conservation, such as climate change, Marine Protected Areas, ocean shipping, invasive alien species, international law and gender.
IUCN, in collaboration with the governments of Sweden and France, held a number of side events on nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation, and was invited to co-organise and participate in several other side events.
Voluntary commitments
Voluntary commitments for the Conference are a series of initiatives undertaken by Governments, Intergovernmental Organisations, financial institutions, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to contribute to the implementation of SDG14. IUCN has taken part in many of these commitments to protect marine environments and ecosystems for future generations.
